As the saying goes, a friend in need is a friend indeed, and plovers need all the friends they can get!  After learning about the threats facing them, I’m sure you’re wondering what you can do to help. Here are some ways that you can be a Plover Pal.

Share the shore

Plovers need space to safely nest and raise their chicks. If you are on a beach and are lucky enough to see a piping plover, give them space.

Read the Signs

Please respect any signs and fencing you might see along the beach. Remember, it’s only temporary -  and you’ll be helping save a species!

Keep Your Pet Leashed

If you take your dog to the beach, make sure to keep him/her on a leash. Dogs finding sticks on the beach are cute and fun, but dogs finding plovers on the beach—not so much.

Leave No Trace

When you leave the beach, remember to pack up all of your belongings… including your garbage. Leftover food and other trash can attract plover predators.

Keep Kites Away

Don’t fly kites near nesting sites. Chicks may see the shadow and think it’s a predator, causing them to stop feeding.

Help Fight Climate Change

Combatting climate change is good for people AND plovers. Reducing your carbon footprint can help keep the world a cooler, cleaner place and help support plover habitat. Don’t know where to start? Check out this article with easy things you can do.
